Original Engraving - "Monument of Lord Mansfield."

Original black-and-white engraving of a monument to William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. No date, circa 1828-1829. 3 1/4" x 6." Print is very clean and intact except for slight age toning and a tiny closed tear limited to upper-right corner in the margins. A Near Fine copy. A beautiful, small engraving featuring John Flaxman's monument to William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield (1705-1793), also known as Lord Mansfield, who was a British barrister, judge, and politician. He is noted for being a key figure in the modernization English laws and the English courts. Flaxman created his sculpture out of marble which depicts Mansfield sitting atop a pedestal and flanked on either side by the personifications of Wisdom and Justice. Wisdom is on the left and holds a Roman balance or scale. Justice is to the right and holds the Book of Law. The print is from an edition of Brayley's Londiniana published by Thomas Hurst, Edward Chance & Company.. Print. Book Condition: Collectible-Near Fine (Near Fine). Binding: No Binding
