E.J.Brill / Luzac, Leiden / London, 1892

A very good copy indeed in the original dark red cloth, spine faded, light damp scarring to lower margins of the boards, text clean and tight. J. L. B. Smith's copy, with his ownership signature on the fep. An important association copy, linking a supposed long extinct species to the possibility that earlier sightings of this prehistoric fish had been reported as being "sea-serpents": In "Old Fourlegs: The Story of the Coelacanth", Smith states " "One of my most constant and peculiar obsessions had always been a conviction that I was destined to discover some quite outrageous creature, I had no idea what, but had come to suspect that it might be a true sea-serpent or something like that" (p.29). Smith correctly identified the Coelacanth in 1938. The book is a cornerstone of cryptozoology
