The history of the Douglas Dakota tells for the first time of how the Dakota was produced at the Douglas Long Beach factory in California, alongside the C-47 for the Army Air Corps,Russia and New Zealand. Today (then 1972) over 1,000 Dakotas remain in military service throughout the world, many of them ex-RAF transports. Developed from the Douglas Commercial 3, which first flew in December 1935,the Dakota served and was known with the Allies as the C-47 Gooney Bird,Spookey, 'ole Bucket-Seats,R4D or Roger Fower Dog; Li-2 Cab as the Russian version and more recently (again, then 1972) "Puff-the-Magic Dragon" as a gunship in Vietnam.More than 10,000 examples of this military transport were built in the USA and many hundreds more under licence in Russia and Japan. No other aircraft has been so widely used on military transport duties. During WW2 the Dakota served in every combat area with the RAF and equipped over 50 squadrons whose experiences with this famous Douglas transport began with the earlier DC-2s which were procured from US civil airlines.Nearly 2,000 Dakotas were obtained from the USA under Lend-lease agreement and served the RAF for over a quarter of a century before final retirement in 1970. Many of the photographs used are hitherto unpublished and many hours of research have been moulded together in this first- ever book to deal exclusively with the RAF Dakota. Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
