Dustwrapper rubbed and edgeworn, with some loss to head of spine panel; faint damp stain to tail of spine and small part of bottom edges; endpapers and edges somewhat foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Good condition. "This book is an attempt to chronicle the life of those brave men and women who founded the first settlement and later established the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope, thus laying the foundations of European South Africa. The period covered, 1652 to 1833, is one in which the most important towns were laid out and the finest buildings and craftsmanship were produced. Under the Dutch in the eighteenth century and the English in the early nineteenth century, town planning, civic and domestic architecture and furniture in South Africa reached a standard which has made this country deservedly world famous and I have endeavoured to describe and illustrate the work then done."
