It is most fitting that this exhibition should be held at Greenwich, for it was from the Royal palace once situated on this bend of the Thames that the foundling charters of Virginia and what was then Massachusetts Bay were issued. The connection between Greenwhich and the American colonies is even closer than this would suggest. The Queen's house, now the focal point of the National Maritime Museum complex, was in fact a gift from James 1 to his wife,Queen Anne of Denmark; and in 1616 Inigo Jones was commissioned to build her residence near Greenwhich Palace on the river. Almost at the same time,3000 miles away, the first permanent English settlement in America was taking root in Virginia - at Jamestown on the James River. And it was the Pilgrim Fathers, sailing from Plymouth in the Mayflower in 1620, with a land grant in North Virginia (the colony stretched north then to the New York area),who were driven from their intended landfall by adverse weather conditions, landed at Cape Cod, and sat tight where they were,to create Massachusetts. An exhibition held in the National Maritime Museum; 14 April to 2 October 1976,to mark the bicentenary of the American Revolution, the largest ever event sponsored by The Times,The Sunday Times and co-sponsors Barclays Bank.
