Original letter handwritten and signed in black ink on light gray paper. Signed, "Yours in haste, Penfield [or an abbreviation of Penfield]," in black ink on back. Dated May 9, 1888. 5 1/4" x 8." Two pages (one leaf of paper with writing on front and back). Letter is very clean and intact except for horizontal and vertical fold lines (likely original) and light to moderate age toning. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. Frederic Courtland Penfield (1855-1922) was an American diplomat who served in London and Cairo and a United States Ambassador to Austria-Hungary. Penfield became the U.S. vice consul to London in 1885. From 1893-1897, Penfield was the U.S. diplomat to Cairo. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Austria-Hungary from 1913-1917. In this letter, Penfield writes to "Ingraham" about closing a confidential business deal and requests further information on the matter. Written sideways on the front is an urgent message from Penfield: "Shut off all newspaper talk that you can!!" At the top is a ink mark that either strikes through the printed header (a London address and fill-in date) or a handwritten notation at top that reads, "Strictly Confidential.". Manuscript.
