The Scythe. No. 16, May 1942 - No. 20, February 1944

4to. Mimeographed sheet stapled into card wrappers, the staples rusting and the wrappers lightly marked, spotted and dusty, and occasionally splitting and somewhat tender at the natural fold. A nice bright set. Includes contributions by Henry Williamson (his three-page essay 'Farming and Finance', which has not been reproduced elsewhere), Gerald Brennan (his essays 'Agriculture in Italy' and 'Dry Farming in Spain'), Norman Nicholson, Adrian Bell, H.J.Massingham, Rolf Gardiner, Richard March and the editor. Duncan started 'The Townsman', initially a quarterly, in January 1938, devoting it to literature and other fine arts, and contributors included Ezra Pound, E.E.Cummings, T.S.Eliot, William Saroyan and Duncan himself. The magazine gently morphed into an agricultural publication (Duncan took up farming a year after the first issue was published), its frequency of publication altering over time, eventually resulting in a name change to 'The Scythe'. This batch of five issues includes the first to appear under that name, and it would appear, confusingly, that it and at least two others were also made available under the old title too. Williamson's contribution appears in the first issue here (No. 16, May 1942), and was the first of his total of six contributions. "We have changed our format five times, our printer six times, our price four times, and even our title has had its vicissitudes" - Duncan, writing in the editorial to one of the final issues.. Book. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Soft cover
