The sea has always been a dominant theme in English poetry and even when the main subject of the poem is remote from the sea itself closely associated imagery crops up with extraordinary frequency. The compiler of this anthology,Myfanwy Piper, has avoided the most obvious examples and has explored much unfamiliar ground. The result is a selection of considerable interest and originality.16 coloured lithographs are specially drawn by Mona Moore that accompany the text are not intended as illustrations of particular poems but as the artist's own interpretation of moods and images evoked by the sea and the sea-shore. Anthology with poetry ranging across the 16th -20thC. NEW EXCURSIONS INTO ENGLISH POETRY.This series is something of a new experiment and demands original work both from the anthologer and artist, though there has been no attempt to give literal and pictorial illustrations of the actual poems, rather the artist has added his own interpretation of the general subject. The authors are no hack compilers, regrouping poems already over-familiar in existing anthologies; each has been chosen because they have not only a special knowledge of the subject, but also because they have an enthusiasm for it and a discriminating judgement. The selections will be personal - they may even seem arbitrary and capricious - but they will have unity and reflect the real temper of the anthologer. Each artist has been chosen because they are also in sympathy with their subject and have a visual interpretation of their own to add to the literary interpretation of the poets, thus every book will have an individual character, depending for its merit on the quality of the anthologer and artist. Mona Mary Moore (b. 20th March,1917 – d. 20th September,2000),was also known as Mona Bentin and later as Deborah Bentin, was a British painter and illustrator, best known for her work during WW2 for both the Recording Britain project and for the War Artists' Advisory Committee. She regularly presented work to a number of magazines including Good Housekeeping, the Radio Times and The Listener amongst others.Born in London, attended school at St.Martin's-in-the-Fields before, aged 14,she obtained a scholarship to St. Martin's School of Art.In 1933 she was awarded another scholarship there, allowing her to stay until she was 19.She then studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts where she learnt lithography.Left the Central in 1939 and in the same summer married Tony Bentin, who also had been an art student. She also designed the jacket covers of Alan Sillitoe's first two books,'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' in 1958 and 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner' the following year.
