Woodcut printer's device on title and last leaf. Polydore Virgil (1470-1555), an Italian born in Urbino, moved to England in 1509, and became Bishop of Bath and Wells. He was thrown into prison and later pardoned for offending Cardinal Wolsey. His history of England remains the best contemporary source for the Tudor period. The first edition (Basle, 1534) had to be revised due to a change in the political climate in England. Polydore Virgil divided England into four parts: Scotland, England, Wales and Cornwall.
