Stephen Powers (1840-1904) was an American ethnographer, journalist, and historian of Indigenous tribes in the United States. His perspectives and writings about Indigenous cultures and people were very forward-thinking in his time, as he painted a sympathetic view toward their plight during a time when colonization was well underway and national policy toward Indigenous communities was hostile. The following is an excerpt from one of Powers's writings in 1875: "Never before in the history has a people been swept away with such terrible swiftness, or so appalled into utter and unwhispering silence forever and forever, as were the California Indians ...." This pamphlet includes reprints of two of Powers's articles about the cultures of Indigenous tribes in California and Nevada. Also included is a Preface by N. Scott Momaday and an essay, "Stephen Powers as Anthropologist" by Robert F. Heizer.. Book. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Soft cover
