Pringle, Thomas, and John Fairbairn (editors) : The South African Journal. No. II. March-April, 1824. Vol. I

(Cape Town: South African Library, 1974)

South African Library Reprint Series 4 (ii). 8vo; blue papered boards; pp. (viii) + (ii) + [87-180]. Sunned on spine, and very slightly bumped; previous owner's discreet book label on front pastedown; trace of fingering to prelims. Very good condition. Facsimile of the original edition, with a new introduction. "A second issue of 750 copies ... appeared on May 6th upon which the Fiscal warned Pringle that it must cease if articles obnoxious to the Government continued to be printed. The item particularly objected to was On the present state and prospects of the English emigrants in South Africa (p. 151). The editors, however, refused to submit to censorship and announced cessation of publication on May 13th. A stormy interview with the Governor followed but Pringle stood firm. At the same time the publication of the S.A. Commercial Advertiser was suspended for similar reasons. Pringle left the Colony in due course and sought financial redress in vain - after all he had ceased publication of his own choice. Fairbairn, however, stayed on to see the resumption of the S.A. Commercial Advertiser a year later under his editorship and the winning of the battle for the freedom of the Press." - A. M. Lewin Robinson, in the Introduction.
