Pulsifer, Joseph C : Original Carte de Visite Photograph - Joseph C. Pulsifer

Original black-and-white carte de visite (CDV) showing a portrait of Joseph C. Pulsifer wearing a suit and facing viewers. The portrait shows Pulsifer from his head to about his chest. No date, circa 1870s. 2 1/2" x 4." A few brief handwritten descriptions are on the back in blue pen. The back also has a black stamp from the Bancroft Library which shows this item was withdrawn. CDV is very clean and intact except for light to moderate age toning, a few tiny marks on front, and slight wear to surfaces and extremities. A Very Good copy. This carte de visite shows Joseph C. Pulsifer (?-?) who was originally from Maine. He sailed around Cape Horn with his brother for the express purpose of forming the Maine-Sacramento Navigation and Mining Company. However, upon Pulsifer's arrival to California, the company was disbanded due to disagreements. There are records that show Pulsifer mined at Rattlesnake Bar, which is on the north fork of the American River in Placer County, from 1849-1851. The carte de visite was a small souvenir photograph that often came in the form of an albumen print which consists of a photo mounted on a paper card. CDVs were commonly traded among collectors like trading cards. Louis Dodero (1824-1902) is credited with inventing the CDV in 1851 although Andre Adolphe-Eugene Disderi (1819-1889) was the first to patent the CDV in 1854. CDVs were very popular through the 1860s but were soon overtaken by the larger cabinet card in the early 1870s.. Photographic Image. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
