Original black-and-white carte de visite (CDV) photograph showing an illustrated group portrait of three of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's children, Alice Mary (1850-1928), Edith (1853-1915), and Anne Allegra (1855-1934). Alice, Edith, and Anne are each wearing a dress and holding one another in a familial embrace. Photo tipped in on paper card. No date, circa 1860s-1880s. 2 1/2" x 4." Title printed in bottom margin on front. CDV is very clean and intact except for light age toning, foxing on front and back, and minuscule wear to surfaces and extremities. A Very Good copy. Original carte de visite portrait photograph of Alice Mary, Edith, and Anne Allegra Longfellow. This illustration portrait of Longfellow's daughters was made by Thomas Buchanan Read (1822-1872), an American poet and painter. Read's portrait of Longfellow's daughters is dated c. 1859 and was used to illustrated Longfellow's famous poem, "The Children's Hour." "The Children's Hour" is about the joy and familial love that Longfellow and his daughters have for one another and the moments when Alice, Edith, and Anne storm Longfellow's study. The poem refers to Alice Mary as "grave Alice," Edith as "Edith with golden hair," and Anne as "laughing Allegra." The carte de visite was a small souvenir photograph that often came in the form of an albumen print which consists of a photo mounted on a paper card. CDVs were commonly traded among collectors like trading cards. Louis Dodero (1824-1902) is credited with inventing the CDV in 1851 although Andre Adolphe-Eugene Disderi (1819-1889) was the first to patent the CDV in 1854.
