It seeks to impart, first of all, general information about the life, manners, habits and customs of a section of the Union's permanent population - chiefly rural - which, for some reason or other, seems to have been neglected in all biographical publications of a similar nature. ... Until the National Party swept the country at the polls in 1924, nobody appears to have thought that there was another section of the people but the urban worth writing about. ... To some extent this book will repair the omission, though the balance in other respects is being gradually redressed by the growth of the Afrikaans press.
