Original billhead printed in dark maroon ink on light beige paper. Also includes handwriting in black ink and pencil. Datelined April 25, 1899 in Auburn, California. 8 1/4" x 4 1/2." Billhead is very clean and intact except for light age toning, two vertical fold lines, a spot of surface wear in upper-left corner on back, and a tipped-in paper stub on back-right edge. A Very Good copy. An original billhead from Robert Wise of Auburn, California to "Mr. A. W. [Kenison?]." Kenison purchased one line item, $30.00 of General Gomez cigars. Kenison appeared to have received a discount of $1.50 so the grand total is $28.50. The printed header reads, "To Robert Wise, Dr., Manufacturer of the Celebrated General Gomez Cigar." In 1892, Robert Wise opened a small cigar shop and factory in Auburn. Wise later took on a business partner, Ernest Burns. In its heyday, Wise's operation manufactured around 1,000 cigars per day. His signature product, the General Gomez Cigar, was named after Maximo Gomez (1836-1905), a Cuban Generalissimo and leading figure in Cuba's War of Independence (1895-1898).. Ephemera.
