S.D. ALGER : 1929 - 1930 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT AND HAND-DRAWN JOURNAL, LOG AND DIARY OF AN AMERICAN SAILOR

Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Very interesting archive of two (2) books written S.D. Alger, as written in book 1, (a large folio, 4 banded, quarter leather ledger-style book. Book 2 is a softcover notebook style 8 x 10 inch journal.) Alger is it seems a young sailor/student who uses his journals for a number of purposes; besides drawing either young ladies he has seen or ones he imagines, he also painstakingly takes notes of his studies in engineering and nautical excercises in morse code and semaphore. Book 1 has an index covering Marine Law, Ship Construction, Steam, Electricity, Seamanship, Navigation and Engineering. He hand draws many figures and machines related to the index headings, some quite complex. He even draws and colors all the semaphore flags and has a Morse Code diagram. His studies are very extensive and his notebooks would, it seems, be the entire 2 years of course notes. There are even typed notes that have been taped in, or in one section, held by paper clip. There are also two log sections wherein he details the "Cruise of 1929" and the "Cruise of 1930". This is a remarkable look at a freshman sailor's initail entry into the world of seamanship and the state of the sailor's knowledge of the times.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good+
