Contemporary emerald morocco gilt and blind, sides with ornate blind motif, surrounded by fleur-de-lis pattern and fine-tool corner-pieces, encased with elaborate gilt floral roll-tool inner border and gilt double rule outer border, board with blind-ruled edges and gilt inner dentelles, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in two, with a repeat design of stylized foliage borders, all edges gilt. , Occasional light browning, otherwise a very good copy in very attractive gilt period binding., 8vo, P. (5), frontis, (2), title, printer’s imprint, iii-vii, blank, 1-320, (4)., Illustrated with a number of in-text engravings depicting people, architecture, and landscapes, and a frontispiece of the author, by J.M.W. Turner, Finde and Stothart.

Rogers (1763-1855) “succeeded to his father’s fortune and took the opportunity to indulge his fancy for writing poetry. A generous patron at whose table the cultured society of London was always welcome, he commissioned Turner as illustrator for an edition of his ‘Italy’ (1822-8), for which he had followed Childe Harold’s footsteps as a tribute to Byron. The volume enjoyed considerable popular success.
