Mariette, Pierre, Paris, 1667

Hand Colored in outline, Excellent, Size : 413x570 (mm), 16.25x22.375 (Inches)

"This map of 1667 has a simple wreath cartouche in the top right corner. The shape of the African continent is a little strange, with numerous coastal inlets. The rivers are distinct and noticeable and only the very large ones are named. No places, bays or rivers are named south of the Tropic of Capricorn, except for one cape on the east coast marked 'Prassum Prom'. Azania and Azanium Mare appear just below the Horn of Africa. All the inhabitants of southern Africa are labelled 'Anthropophagi Aethiopes' or cannibals. The origin of the Nile is once again based on the Ptolemaic concept of twin lakes.", Norwich's Map 41.
