An address given by Hon. Carl Schurz about the United States' approach to imperialism. Countries such as Puerto Rico and the Philippines are referenced. Excerpt from the last page gives a glimpse at Schurz's stance toward the subject: "Let us raise high the flag of our country--not as an emblem of reckless adventure and greedy conquest, of betrayed professions and broken pledges, of criminal aggressions and arbitrary rule over subject populations--but the old, the true flag, the flag of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, the flag of the government of, for, and by the people ... the flag of human rights and of good example to all nations; the flag of true civilization, peace, and goodwill to all men." Carl Schurz (1829-1906) was an American politician and reformer from Germany. Schurz fled to the United States after the German revolutions of 1848-1849. These revolutions were mostly about reforming the autocratic political structure that had been implemented for decades throughout the thirty-nine states of the German Confederation. Schurz called for democratic principles, but after the Prussian government stopped the revolutions, he left Germany due to the threat of political persecution. In the U.S., Schurz became a member of the Republican Party and served in many political positions. Among them, he was a general of the Union Army during the American Civil War, Secretary of the Interior under President Rutherford B. Hayes, and a U.S. Senator from Missouri. One of his most significant platforms as a politician was advocating civil service reform which emphasized electability based on merit, not personal connections.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
