Crown 8vo; original blue-grey cloth; spine gilt; pp. viii + 206 + (ii) + 40. Edges of boards slightly chipped; cloth rather discolored, with a little fishmothing adjacent to top edge of lower board; backstrip splitting midway down, next to upper joint; endpapers somewhat browned and foxed, sporadic light foxing elsewhere. Fair to good. (Hosken p. 178, Mendelssohn p. 295) The title page gives 1898 as the date of publication, but the 40-page publisher's catalogue on thinner paper bound in at the end has a date of 1908. "His particular literary merit lies in the integrity with which he recorded the contemporary scene.
