The article attempts to compare the reactions of two witnesses to the trial, Hannah Arendt and Haim Gouri, to the proceedings. These writers represent two conflicting perspectives- a Jewish-universalist one on the one hand, and a Jewish-Israeli one on the other….Interestingly, the insight of both Arendt and Gouri played a role in subverting the prevalent attitudes toward the memory of the Holocaust in Israeli society. While Arendt’s assertions became a basis of a tendency to universalize the Holocaust, removing it from a specific Jewish context, Gouri’s observations led to a strong identification with Diaspora Jewry.
