This notebook contains brief family histories or biographies of three members of the Chidester family of Wayne County, Ohio, Albert Bowen Chidester (1835/7-1918), Sarah Lyon Chidester (1845-1919), and Samuel Chidester (1784-1863). Their histories are written on eight pages. The remaining pages have poetry (includes copied poems and perhaps originals) and miscellaneous information such as names and birthdays. The histories include information such as Samuel, Albert, and Sarah's places of birth, marriages, and occupations. Samuel Chidester (1784-1863) was born in Morris County, New Jersey and moved to Chippewa, Wayne County, Ohio. He married Margaret McCammant (1800-1848). Samuel and Margaret had eight children, Ephraim, Mary, Henrietta, Caroline, Thomas, Amanda, John, and Albert. After McCammant's passing, Samuel married a widow named Deborah Peek Lyon (1812-1879) in 1851. Deborah had five children, Cornelia, William, Edward, Rachel, and Sarah, from her first marriage to David Lyon (1810-1845). Samuel and Deborah had one son, Samuel Willis (referred to hereafter as "Samuel Willis," not "Samuel"). Samuel Chidester also had a brother by the name of Ephraim. Together, they built a log cabin, sawmill, and woolen mill near Silver Creek in Pleasant Valley (also known as Rogues' Hollow), Chippewa. Samuel became an expert wool and cloth manufacturer and taught his craft to his son, Albert, and stepdaughter, Sarah. Albert Bowen Chidester (1835/7-1918) was one of the sons of Samuel Chidester, Sr. and Margaret McCammant. He was likely born in the log cabin that Samuel and Ephraim had built. Albert was an active member of the Presbyterian Church. Albert continued the family business and ran his father's woolen mill, sold Bibles, manufactured ice cream for the market, and was also a farmer. He married his stepsister, Sarah Lyon. Albert and Sarah had two children, Samuel Peek (referred to hereafter as "Samuel Peek," not "Samuel") and Deborah Margaret (referred to hereafter as "Deborah Margaret," not "Deborah"). Sarah Lyon Chidester (1845-1919) was born in New York. She was the youngest of David and Deborah's six children and part of a Presbyterian family. The Lyons traveled via the Ohio Canal on a houseboat where they landed in Clinton, Ohio. From Clinton, they rode by wagon to Doylestown, Ohio where David worked as a buggy trimmer. Sadly, David passed away from "brain fever." Deborah then married Samuel Chidester, Sr., and she and her children moved to the Chidester estate by Silver Creek in Pleasant Valley (Rogues' Hollow), Chippewa. Sarah married her stepbrother, Albert, and they ran the family woolen mill after Samuel passed away. Sarah worked as a nurse and came to the aid of many of the miners and other residents of Rogues' Hollow. Around 1888, modern technology forced Albert and Sarah to close the family woolen mill. However, Albert and Sarah found financial respite beginning in 1894 when Albert built an ice pond. He harvest ice from this pond to make ice cream which became a successful business.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
