The Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury's re-creation of the gardens at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire has been one of the most exciting garden enterprises of the last thirty years. Here, with photographs taken by Sue Snell over the past seven years, she tells the garden's story. It all began over four hundred years ago when the first Earl of Salisbury built his great house at Hatfield. He created magnificent formal gardens and employed as his gardener John Tradescant the Elder, who filled them with plant discoveries which he brought back from his travels abroad. Over the centuries the gardens were greatly changed, but when Lady Salisbury came to live at Hatfield in 1972 she set about restoring and developing them. Informed by the past, she added plants and 'fancies and conceits' - a cascade and a knot garden being among her many achievements.Today Hatfield fulfils her vision of a garden as a place wher pleasure and peace are both to be found. Rich with knowledge of plants and an eye for beauty, this book will delight all who have an interest in Britain's garden history and in a great garden now once again worthy of its heritage. Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury (born 15th July 1922,and died 12th December 2016),aged 94.She was looked upon as the 'high priestess' of historical garden design and gardens. Described by Sir Roy Strong as the greatest British gardener of the second half of the 20thC,she lived and worked at Hatfield House from !971 until 2004. Probably best known for her restoration of her own gardens at Hatfield House; the Cecil family's Jacobean seat in Hertfordsshire, with an Elizabethan knot-garden there, and parterres and topiaries at her own family's home Cranborne Manor. She also designed gardens for Prince Charles at Highgrove, amongst other, but only on a limited scale. She published an autobiographical book 'A Gardener's Life.'
