A Very Good copy. A speech that was originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on March 14, 1848 by Frederick Perry Stanton (1814-1894), an American lawyer and politician. He served as a U.S. Representative from Tennessee from 1845-1855. He was first elected to Congress as a Democrat but later changed to the Republican Party at the beginning of the Civil War. In this speech, Stanton responds to the recent message of President James K. Polk in which the latter addressed the return of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and Mariano Paredes to Mexico and his refusal to disclose his instructions to U.S. Minister John Slidell. Stanton ardently defends Polk and first states that the president is under no obligation to disclose instructions to diplomats to either part of Congress. In a later part of his speech, Stanton questions why the Whigs find only fault in Polk's administration and the U.S. government and not any with Mexico during the war. Stanton argues that Polk's prosecution of the war was justified because he believes that the annexation of Texas was justified. He cites the treaties following the Battle of San Jacinto, which the U.S. had won, that recognized the independence of Texas. Stanton also argues that Polk's actions leading up to and during the war were reasonable because Mexico had refused to negotiate with Slidell. Stanton also commends the administration for the acquisition of territory from Mexico as a result of the war.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
