Tax receipt for property in Sacramento printed in black ink on beige paper. Dated September 16, 1866. 7 3/4" x 12 1/2." Handwriting in brown ink. Paper, handwriting, and printed text are all very clean and intact. Document begins with Description of Property: "S 1/2, E 1/2 of Lot 8 H + II + 10 + 11th, $550" and "N 1/8 of Lot 8 I + J [+ II + 10+ 11th], $200." The next section is Recapitulation: "Real Estate, $750," "Improvements, [$0]," and "Personal Property, $1750." The last section is Synopsis which lists city and country tax totals: "Tax for State Purposes, $1.10," "Tax for County Purposes, $1.00," "Tax for Redemption Purposes, $0.25," "Tax for Railroad Bonds purposes, $0.10," "Tax for School purposes, $0.15," and "Tax for Insane Asylum purposes, "0.03." for a City Total of $2.63." (County Total is $2.73 after a $0.10 Tax on Country Roads.) At the bottom is the following: "Received of George Lorenz the sum of $65.75 being the amount of Taxes due for State and County purposes, for the year 1866, on the above described property. [Signed] James Lansing, Sheriff and ex officio Tax Collector. By "E [...] White, Deputy." James Lansing (1826-1882) was born in New York and moved to California to work in Sacramento as Chief of Police and Deputy Sheriff. He also worked as County Assessor, owner of the Union Hotel and the International Hotel, and Superintendent of the County Hospital.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
