Steenkamp, W. F. J. (principal editor) : Ekonomiewoordeboek / Economics Dictionary

(Durban: Butterworths, 1981) 040909255X

ISBN 040909255X

8vo; original dark green rexine, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; pp. xviii + 354. Near fine condition. Near-comprehensive English-Afrikaans dictionary of 39 000 terms connected with money and economics. "A normal bilingual dictionary is only a register of Afrikaans words that have more or less the same meaning as specific words in another language. A technical dictionary, however, goes one step further: it specifies that a particular Afrikaans term has the same meaning as a particular English term. This is possible only because the meaning of the English term is delimited. In other words, technical dictionaries have a prescriptive function. The object of this function is to create, within certain limits, uniformity in the language of subject specialists (here: economists). The Economics dictionary will make a tremendous contribution to the stabilisation of Afrikaans in economics. It is compiled by one of the best known economists in the country and it will, by its nature, become a reference work for all economists and technical translators."
