Taylor, J.B : A Pioneer Looks Back

Hutchinson & Co., 1939

The portrait page has been signed by the author J.B. Taylor in blue ink. The boards are shelf rubbed and edge worn, and the book ever so slightly cocked. The cloth has begun to fray along the spine, which is also discoloured with age. Despite this, the boards remain strong and square, with bright gold gilt to the spine. Internally, there are no markings or inscriptions aside from that of the author. There is sporadic foxing throughout but the pages remain legible, crisp and complete. Tightly bound and handsome. JK. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket

First Edition.

(London: Hutchinson, 1939)

8vo; original brown buckram, titled in gilt on spine; no dustwrapper; pp. 248 + (iv); plates. Ex-library/club copy in fair condition. Cloth a little soiled, and frayed at spine extremities and tips of boards; label remnants and bookplate to front endpaper; hand-stamp to front pastedown, and a few elsewhere; binding very slack and upper hinge starting between front endpaper and half-title; sporadic moderate foxing. "As Mr. Taylor's story relates, he and Mr. Hermann Eckstein, in the early days of their partnership, commencing in 1886, had no idea when Mr. Alfred Beit established them in Johannesburg that they were destined to become two of the foundation-stones of the great Rand gold-mining industry." - H. O'Kelly Webber's preface. "Well known as a leader, he played a significant part in South Africa's economic development when still a young man and exercised considerable influence by personal friendships and hospitality. He was reticent, but could chill the unwelcome with a frosty air." - DSAB IV, p. 641
