A brilliant production by Roeder: Oversize-volume format. Gray cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on spine, as issued. Text by Kiri Te Kanawa and Conrad Wilson. Photographs by various contributors. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Singapore to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Kiri Te Kanawa's "Opera For Lovers". The uniquely personal point-of-view of the beloved diva on opera. "She has produced a book of thoughts, recollections, and observations on some well-beloved operas along with thoughts, recollections, and observations on colleagues, singers, conductors, and directors. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa talks of what opera means, revealing her favorite composers and showing the various ways in which conductors and singers interpret a work" (Publisher's blurb). For much of her forty-plus-year career, that is from 1971 onwards, Kiri Te Kanawa was regarded - and reigned - as the world's greatest diva. No one could touch her Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, and Richard Strauss. She also expanded the song-recital repertoire, encompassing operetta, such figures as Liszt, Rachmaninov, and Ravel, the flamboyant and technically demanding Spanish Romantic composers, the American Songbook (including Bernstein's "West Side Story" in its entirety), Broadway musicals, and the songs of popular culture. She embraced them all, breathing new life into everything she sang. One of the defining aspects of Kiri's career is that her critics dislike her for exactly the same reason her admirers love her: Her ravishingly beautiful voice. To her detractors, it's all she is. To her fans, it's all that matters. An absolute "must-have" title for Kiri Te Kanawa collectors. This copy of "Opera For Lovers" is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the front free endpaper by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with two Souvenir Materials: Her 1998 "Celebrity Recital" at Bridgeport Hall Manchester and her 2010 Ravinia Festival Recital, both very prominently and beautifully signed, in gold pen-marker and black pen-marker respectively, by Dame Kiri. This title is a classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy (with signed Souvenir Materials) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed set thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates of her landmark performances. One of the greatest divas of our time. A fine collectible set. . ISBN 9810078331.
