The text is a facsimile of the extract from the 1732 edition of Churchill's Collection of Voyages. 'Willem Ten Rhyne was a physician in the Dutch East India Company in Java. He called at the Cape on his way to the East in 1673 and was there from the 15th October to 10th November. He gives an account of Table Bay and environs but the main interest of the report centres around the description of the Hottentots and secondarily the natural history of the Cape. Most of the information about the Hottentots was obtained from Eva, a Hottentot girl wo had been brought up in Jan van Riebeek's household and who could speak Dutch and Portuguese. The pages reproduced are extracted from Vol. IV "Churchill's Collection of Voyages", 1732 Edition. The original account was published in Latin at Schaffhausen in 1686 entitled "Schediasma de Promontoris Bonae Spei, ejusve tractus incolis Hottentotis".'
