With a folded handwritten letter on black-bordered stationery, dated 1886, from J. R. Lowell to George Putnam, in which the set of Thackeray is mentioned. The note has been affixed to the front flyleaf and is in very good condition despite a few spots of foxing and light soil. Putnam's pencil signature appearson the verso of the flyleaf. Book is in very good condition, joints tender and somewhat scuffed, corners and spine shelfworn. Blank preceding half title is partially detached.
