Original black and white photograph. Prisoners of war are shown doing hard labor in a prison camp near Malaga, Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Photograph measures 9 1/8" x 7." Photograph comes with printed text on beige paper measuring 6" x 8 1/2." On the back of the photograph is a black stamp dated August 3, 1938 and instructions for properly crediting the Associated Press for all photographic reproductions. Photograph is very clean and intact except for very slight wrinkling, most of which is at the bottom. Paper with text is clean and intact overall. Part of the paper was originally adhered to the back of the photograph; the bottom edge of the paper has a piece missing (which is adhered to the back of the photograph) measuring about 2" x 2 3/8." The text on the paper reads as follows: "1594, Associated Press Photo, From New York, Caution -- Use Credit. Hard labor for war prisoners. No idle moments in prison camps are permitted. Spanish Loyalist troopers after capture by the forces of General Franco. Swamp reclamation, road building and mining help pay for their keep. Here are some at work on a drainage project near Malage. Associated Press Photo. ABC HC MONT HWT 730A, 8-3-38 LON MEX, 68." The Spanish Civil War lasted from 1936-1939. The war was fought between Republicans (Loyalists) who pledged allegiance to the left-leaning Second Spanish Republic. They, with the help of anarchists, fought against a revolt by conservative Nationalists who were led by General Francisco Franco. The war is remembered for the strong political divisions involved and atrocities committed by both the Republicans and Nationalists. The Nationalists won the war and ruled Spain until 1975..
