Some documents are bound wrappers while others are typescripts. Some of the documents have brief handwritten inscriptions. Includes dated items from 1907-1908 and undated items, circa 1907-1908. Various measurements between about 7" x 10" and 9" x 14." Page count varies for each item. Items are clean and intact except for a few fold lines, light age toning, slight wear to extremities, and the small occasional mark. Each item and the entire collection are Very Good. Collection of six original documents relating to the appellate case, "The People of the State of California vs. John F. Caulfield," in which Caulfield appealed his conviction and sentence to ten years of hard labor in prison for the rape of Mrs. May Adams and denial of motion for a new trial. The judge overseeing the appellate case was Hon. William P. Lawlor. Attorneys for Caulfield were Frank McGowan and Elmer Westlake. Attorneys for the People of California were U. S. Webb and W. H. Langdon. Deputy Clerk was Percy J. Hayselden. Caulfield was originally convicted in the Superior Court of the City and County of San Francisco. The following is a summary of the items in the collection numbered 1-6. 1) "In the District Court of Appeal of the State of California, First Appellate District, The People of the State of California, Respondent, vs. John F. Caulfield, Appellant, Transcript on Appeal," blue paper wrappers, 1907, 172 pages. Also known as a Record on Appeal, this document is a transcript of the court proceedings from the original trial to be used in the appellate case. The transcript includes printed text from various court documents and laws that include, but are not limited to, affidavits, the Bill of Exceptions, and witness testimonies. Included are witness testimonies for the Defense from Joel James Blamey, Charles Fulton, Nicholas Bullerdieck, John Francis Caulfield, Charles McKeany, and Patrick Murphy and witness testimonies for the People from Mrs. May Adams, John R. Dower, and Harry Hook. 2) Typed Respondent's Brief in "The People of the State of California, Plaintiff and Respondent, vs. John F. Caulfield, Defendant and Appellant," eight pages. This is the Respondent's Brief arguing against the Defendant's request for an appeal. 3) Typed copy of the Respondent's Brief, with handwritten corrections, six pages. Nearly, if not exactly, identical to the brief under No. 2. The Respondent argues against Caulfield's appeal and states that Caulfield's conviction and ten-year prison sentence should be affirmed. 4) "Criminal No. 112, In the Supreme Court of the State of California, The People of the State of California, Respondent, vs. John F. Caulfield, Appellant. Petition for a Hearing in the Supreme Court," beige paper wrappers with staple binding, 1908, ten pages. Includes printed transcripts of Caulfield's appeal ("Petition for a Hearing in the Supreme Court") and the Respondent's Brief ("Opinion of the District Court of Appeals, First Appellate District"). 5) "In the District Court of Appeal of the State of California, First Appellate District, The People of the State of California, Respondent, vs. John F. Caulfield, Appellant. Appellant's Opening Brief," blue paper wrappers, 1907, fourteen pages. Printed Appellant's Brief for the defense of Caulfield. 6) "Criminal No. 112. In the District Court of Appeal of the State of California, First Appellate District, The People of the State of California, Plaintiff and Respondent, vs. John F. Caulfield, Defendant and Appellant. Respondent's Brief," beige paper wrappers, 1907, twelve pages. Printed Respondent's Brief that is nearly, if not exactly, identical to the briefs under Nos. 2, 3, and 4.. Ephemera.
