The P. F. Volland Company; The Seven Arts Book Shop : Original Collection of Materials Relating to a Case Made Against the Seven Arts Book Shop by the P. F. Volland Company, 1927-1929 (Forty-four Items).

Original collection of forty-four materials including invoices, business and legal correspondence, and handwritten letters. The materials in this collection document a financial dispute between the P. F. Volland Company in Joliet, Illinois and the Seven Arts Book Shop in Carmel, California. 1927-1929. Measurements of the documents range between about 6 1/4" x 10 1/2" and 18" x 14." Most of the documents are letter size. The majority of the materials are invoices and business and legal correspondence. Some of the correspondence are letters from lawyers representing P. F. Volland. There are fifteen invoices, twelve of which are from P. F. Volland asking for payment. There are few handwritten letters and order invoices that provide more details about the dispute between the two parties. Most of the text is typed or printed. Some documents have ink signatures of credit representatives, lawyers, and other people involved in the case. Between 1927 and 1929, the P. F. Volland Company sent several invoices requesting payment of $31.28 for an order of Christmas cards, books, and the like placed by the Seven Arts Book Shop. P. F. Volland claimed their payment was past due and that legal action would be taken if they did not send payment. Seven Arts countered saying the items were unsaleable after the bookstore went on hiatus and that they no longer needed the items. Seven Arts further claimed to have returned the items to P. F. Volland. The order invoices show which items Seven Arts had ordered. Much of the correspondence is between Helena and Herbert Heron and the credit manager of P. F. Volland, P. E. John. Chronologically, the last documents show P. F. Volland filing a suit against Seven Arts for their past due account. The P. F. Volland Company was founded in 1908 and published a variety of printed materials such as books, greeting cards, and calendars until 1959 when the Shaw Barton Company took over. The Seven Arts Book Shop was located in the historic Seven Arts Building (which still stands to this day) which was commissioned by Herbert Heron (1884-1968) and his wife, Helena Heron. Herbert Heron was a Shakespearian actor and playwright and the eighth mayor of Carmel. Herbert promoted the arts and is credited as being the founder Carmel's Forest Theater which was established in 1910. Herbert and Helena worked together at the outdoor theater and Helena contributed to plays and productions with her set and costume designs.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
