A Very Good copy. A speech originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on February 9, 1848 by James Houston Thomas (1808-1876), an American lawyer and politician. He was a Democrat. Thomas served as the Attorney General of Tennessee from 1836-1842 and a U.S. Representative from Tennessee from 1847-1851 and 1859-1861. In this speech, Thomas adamantly defends President James K. Polk and U.S. involvement in the Mexican-American War. He begins his speech by specifically defending Polk's non-disclosure of his correspondence with U.S. Minister to Mexico John Slidell. Slidell had been sent by Polk to negotiate peace terms with Mexico but was rejected. Thomas defends this confidentiality as being a norm used by past presidents including George Washington. He also argues that the correspondence would present no incriminating evidence against Polk on the grounds that they possibly show Polk's intention to make peaceful settlement with Mexico. Much of Thomas's speech also counters past statements by his Whig opponents. He argues that many Whigs have been hypocritical in their stance regarding the war and that they have changed their views on multiple occasions. Ultimately, Thomas places the responsibility of the war's inception on Mexico and argues that the U.S.'s participation in the war is just and patriotic.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
