Original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt lettering and decorations on the front cover and spine. 5 1/4" x 7 1/2." 420 pages, complete. Illustrated plates in sepia tones by F. C. Yohn, complete. Twelve additional pages of advertisements for other books published by the Bowen-Merrill Company in the back. Printed and bound by Braunworth, Munn & Barber in Brooklyn, New York. Former owner's signature in blue ink on the front free endpaper: "Nellie P. Skinner, 1901." Pages and covers are very clean and intact. There are a few spots on the covers and a small bump at the top edge of the front cover. Maurice Thompson (1844-1901) was an American author, poet, and naturalist. Many of Thompson's works are about local history in Indiana. Alice of Old Vincennes is his most well-known novel and its popularity rivaled that of Ben-Hur when it was first published. The book is a historical romance about a young woman named Alice living in Vincennes, Indiana during the American Revolutionary War. Frederick Coffay Yohn (1875-1933) was an American artist and illustrator. He signed his work as "F. C. Yohn."
