T. Preston / G, Thomson, London and Edinburgh 1814/1810/1810/1812/1818

An attractive set of the first five volumes, bound in two. (A 6th collection was published some 23 years later in 1841). Each volume is signed at the foot of the engraved title by G. Thomson. Very good clean tall copies, some margins strengthened, a few bottom corners defective, only affecting engraved text in one instance, in contemprary 1/2 dark green morocco, marbled boards, gilt emblematic fleurons on the spines, newly and professionally restored and refurbished. The binding is a rare early Cape binding by George Greig, noted Cape printer and binder, with his ticket in each volume, and is ca. 1825-1830. An interesting association item with important early British Period Cape of Good Hope connections as follows: Each volume bears on the front endpaper an inscription from W.B.Dundas to C H Graham 1814. William Bolden Dundas (1785-1858) , noted soldier and Colonial military personality, married a sister of John Graham (1778-1821), after whom Grahamstown is named. Helen Christian Graham, another sister of John Graham, married Cape and Natal legal luminary and judge Henry Cloete (1792-1870) in 1816. Each front board is inlaid with a green morocco name label Mrs. Henry Cloete. Her autograph ownership signature also appears at the head of the title for Vol. 5. Complete sets are very scarce, especially with such an interesting provenance.
