In his letter, Turner addresses French and gives a positive review of his work. Turner's letter reads, in part, "I have examined carefully the plane table work executed by you while connected with my party in Alaska. I am highly pleased with the sheets, the topography showing the skill of a practiced hand, and the draughting being all that could be desired. Your topographical sheets are on a par with the best turned in at this office. ... I shall not fail to mention your services in my forthcoming report." Forney's letter is a Letter of Recommendation addressed to anonymous recipients. Forney's letter reads, "This is to certify that Mr. James A. French was associated with me in the Topographical Survey of the Coast, North of Piedras Blancas, California, and while with me developed into an efficient hand with the plane Table, and I can recommend him as an honest, trustworthy and industrious man, and capable of doing good work with the plane Table, in the toughest kind of a country.".
