Original tax stamp on purple paper. 8" x 7." This stamp is not a perfin and has no punched holes. Paper is very clean and intact overall. Several wrinkles and horizontal and vertical fold lines. Most of the text and illustrations are printed in black ink. In the center at the top is an illustration of a women with an eagle behind her, posed by common taxable items, including a box of cigars, a barrel of tobacco, and a bottle of Scotch. Printed in blue is the stamp number, the year "1877," and the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). Faint "USIR" watermark. Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: "Coupon for Dealers in Manufactured Tobacco Special Tax for March 1879. [rewritten as 1878]," "Coupon for Retail Liquor Dealers Special Tax for April 1879. [rewritten as 1878]," and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." Printed text at the bottom: "5 Dollars Per Year." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. The stamp has fill-in sections. This stamp has been filled out in full. The handwritten portions include the following: "$2.50" at the top, payment received from "J. L. Coleman" for total of "Two 50"/100 for his business in "Fond du Lac, state of "Wisconsin," dated at "Fond du Lac" on "July 31, 1878," and signature of tax collector "A. K. Oslow," District "3" in the state of "Wisconsin." Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items.
