Original tax stamp on brown paper. 8" x 7." This stamp is a perfin with six triangular punched holes showing it has been used. Paper is very clean and intact. Horizontal fold line at center. A few small wrinkles. Text and illustrations are printed in black ink including the year "1879" and the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). "USIR" watermark. In the center at the top is an illustration of a women with an eagle behind her, posed by common taxable items, including a box of cigars, a barrel of tobacco, and a bottle of Scotch. Printed in blue is the stamp number. The stamp has fill-in sections. Three lines are filled in including the signature of the tax collector, "Thomas Posey[?]," "2" (for District 2), and "NC" (for the state of North Carolina). Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: "Coupon for Dealers in Manufactured Tobacco Special Tax for March 1880.," "Coupon for Dealers in Manufactured Tobacco Special Tax for April 1880.," and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." Printed text at the bottom: "5 Dollars Per Year." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once.. Ephemera.
