Original tax stamp on beige paper. 8" x 7." This stamp is a perfin with six triangular punched holes showing it has been used. Paper is very clean and intact. Horizontal fold line at center and small fold in upper-right corner. Light marks possibly from rubbing on the back. A Fine copy. Most of text and illustrations are printed in black ink. In the center at the top is an illustration of a women with an eagle behind her, posed by common taxable items, including a box of cigars, a barrel of tobacco, and a bottle of Scotch. Printed in red is the number of the tax stamp, the year "1883," and the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). "USIR" watermark. The stamp has fill-in sections. Only one line has handwriting, the signature of the tax collector, "James Armstrong." Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: "Coupon for Dealers in Manufactured Tobacco Special Tax for April 1884." and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." Printed text at the bottom: "5 Dollars Per Year.," which has been replaced with a superimposed purple stamp that reads, "Act of March 3, 1883. $2.40." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once.. Ephemera.
