Original tax stamp on orange paper. 8" x 7." This stamp is a perfin with ten triangular punched holes showing it has been used or invalidated. Paper is very clean and intact. Subtle horizontal fold line at center. Two, almost imperceptible pinholes in lower-left and lower-right corners. A Fine copy. Text and illustrations are printed in black ink including the year "1879" and the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). "USIR" watermark. In the center at the top is a an illustration of a women with an eagle behind her, posed by common taxable items, including a box of cigars, a barrel of tobacco, and a bottle of Scotch. Printed in blue is the stamp number. The stamp has fill-in sections but no handwriting. Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: "Coupon for Peddler Third Class Special Tax for April 1880." [this portion is cut laterally, but the cut is likely original and may indicate that the coupon for April 1880 has been used] and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." Printed at the bottom: "15 Dollars Per Year." Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items.
