Original tax stamp on beige paper. 8" x 7." This stamp is a perfin with seven triangular punched holes showing it has been used or invalidated. Paper is very clean and intact. Subtle horizontal fold line at center. Small spot on the front barely affecting text about the printer. Almost imperceptible pinhole in lower-right corner. A Fine copy. Most of the text and illustrations are printed in black ink. In the center at the top is an illustration of a Mercury holding a caduceus, seating around a variety of kegs, barrels, and vessels containing alcoholic drinks. Printed in red is the stamp number, the year "1876," and the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). The stamp has fill-in sections but no handwriting. Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: part of "Coupon for Retail Liquor Dealers Special Tax for March 1877. [cut in half laterally]," "Coupon for Retail Liquor Dealers Special Tax for April 1877.," and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." Printed text at the bottom: "25 Dollars Per Year." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once.. Ephemera.
