Original letter typed in purple ink on light beige paper with some handwriting in black ink. Signed, "W. K. Van Reypen," in black ink. Letter is on government stationery with a printed seal that reads, "Department of the Navy, Bureau of Medicine & Surgery." Datelined March 3, 1898 in Washington, D.C. 8" x 10 1/2." One page. Letter is very clean and intact except for two horizontal fold lines (perhaps original), age toning, a few wrinkles, several small blue ink stains on back (barely visible from the front), and slight fading and streaking to the signature and handwritten portions. A Very Good copy. In this letter, Surgeon General William K. Van Reypen writes a brief letter of acknowledgment to "C. L. G. Anderson, M.D." of Hagerstown, Maryland. Van Reypen's letter possibly references Dr. Anderson's application for service during the Spanish-American War. The letter reads, "Sir: Your letter of recent date has been received and placed on file for future reference. Very respectfully, W. K. Van Reypen, Surgeon General, U. S. Navy." William K. Van Reypen (1840-1924) was an American surgeon and medical director who was part of the prominent Van Reypen family of Bergen (present-day Jersey City), New Jersey. The Van Reypens were one of the founding families of Bergen. Van Reypen graduated from New York University and New York University Medical College. Van Reypen went on to become an assistant surgeon in the 2nd Regiment of New Jersey Volunteers during the Civil War and an assistant surgeon at the United States Navy Hospital in Brooklyn. He was eventually appointed Surgeon General of the Navy by Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Van Reypen was also named Chief of the Naval Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and retired with the rank of Senior Rear Admiral.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
