8vo. 248pp, binding copy without covers, half-title dust-soiled, occasional foxing noted at final few pages, text otherwise clean and bright, edges untrimmed, text block tight. An account of an Englishman who was transported to the colony of Australia three times between 1801 and 1829 for criminal behavior. The book was written by Vaux during his confinement at Newcastle. It is generally held to be amongst the best early accounts of Sydney, and also the first full-length autobiography written in Australia as well as the first dictionary written in Australia. It was reprinted with a variant title by Hunt and Clarke, London, 1827, and also Whittaker, Treacher, and Arnot, London, 1829, and 1830. A modern reprint was issued by William Heinemann, London, 1964. The present item is volume I of the rare first edition.
