Eclogue IV (or, Fourth Eclogue) is a poem written by the Roman poet, Virgil. The poem was written around 42 BCE and published around 39-38 BCE. The poem is about the birth of a boy in the future who Virgil prophesies as a savior. The interpretation of this poem by Christians around late antiquity to the Middle Ages is that the boy is Jesus Christ. Later interpretation by modern historians argue the identity of the boy is that of the hoped-for son of Marc Antony and Octavia the Younger. Yet other modern interpretations say the identity of the boy is purposely vague and that the poem serves more as a cypher. The introduction by S. T. Farquhar gives some background on the work. What follows is the original Latin text of the poem and then an English translation by J. W. Mackail.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: Soft cover
