On offer an archive of vintage diaries from the hand of Winfred Wilkens, Rumney Village New Hampshire, b. March 13, 1911, married to Evelyn January 20, 1943. Thirty [30] diaries 1942, then 1947 through 1976 detail the average but very interesting life of Winfred. A reading of the diaries tell us many things: Winfred is obsessive accounting for birthdays of everyone he knows in the Rumney, Plymouth and West Plymouth area plus many mentions for Massachusetts and Maine. He reports many of the births and deaths too. He is a license plate collector and spends a fair bit of time on his hobby which is also quite exotic. For example in 1947 WW receives Honduran plates from a contact. Winfred works at the mill, taps for syrup, hunts, fishes and is a devoted father and he accounts for nearly every sniffle of his 2 young boys. WW is also very mechanical spending a lot of time fixing and testing his motorcycle, truck and cars. Here are some snippets from the first two diaries: 1942 - "Went and signed up for gasoline ration cards. I got a B3 for my car, 57 gallons, and a card for my motorcycle, 21 gallons." "Fun to watch the Navy planes playing follow the leader." 1947 - Leaving Jan.12th, Winfred takes a long driving trip cross country New Hampshire through to Alabama onto California, averaging over 500 miles per day [and he still has time to detail his itinerary], begins with "Left home about ten after a sorrowful goodbye." "Dick got a letter from National Iron Works for him to call so he went down and got a job at $1.10 per hour to start." "Went to Golden Gloves championships." "Moses, Ralph and I went down to city dump for license plates but no luck." By February after no luck finding work WW heads back and is home by the 21st. He notes 7186 total miles. There is so very much more but he frequently notes and stoically so; "Hands are pretty lame but have worked every day so far." This is a great historical archive for the Rumney and local area New Hampshire genealogy.. Manuscript.
