Wyatt, M Digby : The Industrial Arts of the Nineteenth Century. a Series of Illustrations of the Choicest Specimens Produced By Every Nation at the Great Exhibition of Works of Industry, 1851 (2 volumes)

Day & Sons Lithographers to the Queen, London, 1851

Elephant Folio. First editions: Volume I - 1851; Volume II 1853. Dedicated by permission to His Royal Highness The Prince Albert (who was the motivator for this exhibition). Published in two first edition volumes: VOLUME I in 1851 and VOLUME II in 1853. The cloth covers on both volumes are badly worn on the back panel and the front panel of Volume One is particularly grubby looking as if an ink spill has tried to be cleaned off. The fore-edge of the boards are worn through. The paperblock of both volumes are substantially loose due to the age of the binding glue which has become brittle with age and deteriorated. The board corners are bumped. Volume II has been subject to dampness with indication of page rippling and some staining to the top margin and leaching through onto the pictorial portion of a few of the plates. All plates are present with the exception of PLATE 53 ANDROMEDA which is missing from Volume I. PLATE CXXXII is mis-numbered as 133 although this is an original typographic error. Plates 141; 142; 143 and 144 are out of sequence but this appears to be an original binding error. Each plate illustration is prefaced by a one page, sometimes double sided textual page followed by a blank cover page and then the illustration page. Marbled end papers. Half leather with barreled spine. Gilt titling to the spine still bright and with gilt decoration to the raised bands on the spine. A good candidate for rebinding/recasing. (Colmaccon-xx-NIYY-15). Book Condition: Fair. Binding: Half-Leather
