The color illustrations are of geometric bouquets of stars and flowers. One of the illustrations is printed on front; the other illustration is printed on the inside of this front panel. Hand-colored illustrations on front panel and its verso. Decorative pink bow along spine. Card is used but only with hand coloring and an added exclamation point to the message. No date, circa 1900s-1920s. 5 1/2" x 4 1/2." Card is very clean and intact but has slight wrinkling throughout and some age toning. A Very Good copy. An original greeting card for the occasion of celebrating a mother's birthday. The hand-colored illustrations are done in watercolor and feature colors such as blue, green, purple, orange, yellow, and pink. The front hand-colored illustration shows people walking around a nineteenth-century or early twentieth-century town with cottages and a church. A mother is shown in the foreground buying flowers from a street vendor with her daughter. The interior hand-colored illustration is a stem with leaves and flowers. The front message reads, "Happy Birthday--Mother." Butterflies dance underneath the interior printed birthday message: "With love and best wishes to the dearest mother ever!" An original greeting card that can be used to celebrate the summer season. The color illustration on front features a picturesque scene of a creek and forest. A poem is printed on back titled, "Summer," and is an excerpt from one of Willis Gaylord Clark's poems, perhaps of the same name. The excerpt reads, "The Spring's gay promise melted into Thee / Fair Summer! and thy gentle reign is here, / Thy emerald robes are on each leafy tree; / In the blue sky thy voice is rich and clear, / And the free brooks have songs to bless thy reign-- / They leap in music midst thy bright domain." Willis Gaylord Clark (1808-1841) was an American poet. He had a twin brother, Lewis Gaylord Clark, who also pursued a literary career as a magazine editor and publisher. The illustration is signed, "B. G." Two Mexican postage stamps tipped in upper-right corner with a cancellation postmark, a purple c. 1950s "35 Cts Correos Mexico Entrega Immediata" stamp (with illustration of hands and dove) and a dark gray c. 1954 "30 Cts Correo Aereo Mexico; Cuauhtemoc" stamp (with illustration of Cuauhtemoc). "Via Air Mail" sticker also tipped in on front. Envelope is used and has an address to Robert Schmidt in Ontario, California. Postmarked July 19, 1958. 6 1/2" x 3 1/2." Original Philatelic Ephemera - First Day Cover (Envelope) Commemorating the Dedication of the Port Arthur-Orange Bridge in Texas, September 8, 1938 (Together with) Printed Port Arthur-Orange Bridge Postcard

Original event cover (envelope) on beige paper with two commemorative cachets on front and a laid-in printed color postcard featuring the Port Arthur-Orange Bridge. Envelope: 6 1/2" x 3 1/2." Postcard: 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." Envelope is used. Postcard is unused. Envelope is virtually pristine and intact except for age toning and a few bands of offsetting that appear to be from the glue of the envelope's flaps. Postcard is virtually pristine and intact except for age toning. Both envelope and postcard are Near Fine. One of the envelope's cachets is printed text in the upper-left corner that reads, "First Day Cover, Port Arthur-Orange Bridge, Dedication Sept. 7-8; This bridge is 7,700 feet long and 230 feet high over the Neches River. This cover was sent in the first pouch of U. S. Mail to cross this bridge. Port Arthur, Texas, 'The City of Opportunity,' ' We Oil the World.'" The other cachet is a pictorial purple stamp with an illustration showing a sweeping view of the bridge with a ship passing underneath and text that reads, "Opening Celebration Sept. 7-8; Port Arthur-Orange; Tallest in the South." Envelope has two stamps with cancellation marks, a brown c. 1938 1 1/2 Cents Martha Washington stamp and brown c. 1930 1 1/2 Cents Warren G. Harding stamp. There are also two postmarks; one reading, "Port Arthur, Texas, 1938"; the other reading, "Orange, Texas, Sep 8, 1938, 9 PM." Envelope is addressed to "Newell D. Voss (?), c/o Pan American Airways, Brownsville, Texas." Blue "B. P. Roberts" stamp on top back flap. The postcard shows a color illustration on front of the Port Arthur-Orange Bridge's apex in side profile with three small inset illustrations pictured underneath of the "P. A. Pleasure Pier Bridge," "Hotel Goodhue," and "Orange County Court House." Brief printed text on front and back of postcard describe some of the bridge's dimensions and other statistics. This envelope and its cachets commemorate the dedication of the Port Arthur-Orange Bridge which actually took place on September 8, 1938, the day of the bridge's completion. Construction began in 1936 and came about due to a need for expediting travel between the towns of Port Arthur in Jefferson County and Orange in Orange County, Texas. During World War II, the bridge facilitated bus travel which was important for carrying out military logistics. The bridge spans the Neches River and its impressive height allows for tall naval ships to pass through. Poster is clean and intact overall but has age toning throughout, a horizontal crease at center, a split along center crease that comes in from left edge about 1 1/2," a few tiny chips and closed tears along edges, slight wrinkling, and a few bits of tape or tape residue on back and lower-left corner. A Very Good copy. A beautiful promotional poster for the 1895 Modern Life Library edition of Gyp's famous novel, A Gallic Girl. A Gallic Girl is also known as Le Mariage de Chiffon (Chiffon's Marriage), which was first published in 1894. A Gallic Girl was written by Gyp, the pseudonym of French author Sibylle Aimee Marie Antoinette Gabrielle, Comtesse de Martel de Janville (1849-1932). Sibylle's mother was the Comtesse de Mirabeau (1827-1903), who was also a writer. A Gallic Girl is perhaps the best-known work by Sibylle. A Gallic Girl (1895) was also originally edited by Henri Pene du Bois and published by Brentano's. Henri Pene du Bois (1858-1906) was an American author, literary critic, journalist, and friend of French writer Guy de Maupassant. Henri named his son after Maupassant. Brentano's was founded in 1853 by August Brentano as an independent bookstore in New York City. It eventually opened other locations in the United States and even abroad. Brentano's also became a publisher that specialized in French literature. Over the years, Brentano's changed hands multiple times but its final owner was the Borders Group. A postcard showing a view of the Theodore Roosevelt Dam near Phoenix, Arizona. The Roosevelt Dam is built on the Salt River and forms the reservoir, Theodore Roosevelt Lake. The dam was originally known as "Salt River Dam #1" and did not receive its presidential namesake until 1959. The primary purpose of the dam was to provide water storage and flood control for the Salt River Valley. Construction for the Roosevelt Dam began in 1903 and was completed in 1911. A postcard showing the infamous "Lakeview Gusher," an eruption of oil and other hydrocarbons that came from a pressurized oil well, namely the Number One well pictured here, owned by the Lakeview Oil Company in the Midway-Sunset Oil Field, Kern County, California. The gusher first erupted on March 15, 1910 after pressurized oil fractured the well casing over the drill bit. About 9.4 million barrels of crude oil were released before the gusher was contained in September 1911. Efforts were made to capture the oil, but less than half was reclaimed. Another man stands nearby with his left hand on his hip. The pencil inscriptions on back provide clues as to the subjects. The inscriptions read, "Fish Creek; Mrs. Teddy; Roosevelt; Mr. [Guthrie?]; Mama." Mr. Guthrie may be the man standing with his hand on his hip. This photo may depict part of the 1911 tour the Roosevelts undertook to dedicate and open the Theodore Roosevelt Dam which is located on the Salt River near Phoenix, Arizona in Gila and Maricopa Counties. Addressed to "Mrs. W. H. Otterson" in Willows, California. The correspondence reads, "Dear Pop and Mother, [Nee?], [--?], P. K. and Boof have not got to read it yet having nice weather. A happy new year and love to all. Will rite [sic[ soon [signed with writer's initials]."
