1905 hardcover (cloth covered, apparently handmade), reprinted eight months after the first edition during the same year. 20 pages (some blank, and several black & white plates along with text). Size: About 3½-inches wide x 6-inches high. Frontispiece of Park Row. Condition: Some wear, light age darkening, else overall Very Good. Text is very readable, plates of buildings ("sky scrapers") and street scenes are clear and vivid. This is the story and etchings of a noted artist of his time, Joseph Pennell, who was 45-years-old at the time of this publication. The etchings of Pennell are "instinct with the quality . . . with crispness in their execution and a lightness and gaiety in their arrangement as pictures." He has been called "the ablest painter-etcher now living and working." Etchings include the Trinity Building, the Four-Story House, the Stock Exchange, the Bank of Metropolis, the Times Building, the buildings at 42nd St. and Lower Broadway. Pennell served as Chairman of the Jury on Illustration and Engraving at the invitation of the authorities at the St. Louis Exposition. He lived in New York City for a brief period. Imprint: Norwalk, Connecticut, The Easton Press, 1986
Binding:
Hardback
[1986] Maroon binding, full leather hardcover featuring beautiful gilt designs/gilt lettering. Frontispiece, artwork by Pat Morrissey, 341 pages. Sophisticated, fine binding has four raised ridges on spine. Lettering, designs stamped with gorgeous accents of 22kt. gold - a hallmark of fine bookmaking. This beautifully bound book was hand selected from individually tanned hides. Textured and shaded, acid-neutral paper won't turn yellow over time. Pages are Smyth-sewn into binding for permanence (not glued like ordinary books). Edges gilded on three sides to enhance the elegance of the book. Endpapers have repeating design. Satin ribbon page marker bound in. Condition: New, pristine. Free of binding cracks, tears. Binding gilt not chipped - fine. Free of bookplates, stickers, writing, and page tears. Book stored in temperature-controlled environment - no smelly damp stains or the smell of a previous smoker. This book is science fiction at its best. Here the author presents a political science fiction story, which is more fascinated by problem-solving than by political systems. It won top awards. Although Le Guin's sympathies are engaged by the anarchists of Annares, she recognizes what they have given up in their pursuit of equality, and although she exposes the inequalities and unfairness of the capitalistic parent world of Urras, she also recognizes its beauty, color, and freedom. An exciting science fiction novel that has brought the author international recognition. A beautiful book in full leather and gilt designs and lettering. In gift-giving condition.
