Original Stereocard Photograph. "American Scenery, Boston, Washington Elm, Cambridge."

circa.1870s. Stereograph on yellow board with curved corners (6 7/8 x 3 1/2 inch). Title underlined on the backside of the board listing stereocards for "Boston and Vicinity". The image shows the lower part of the Elm tree with a iron gate around the base and a granite marker stating "Under This Tree Washington First Took Command of the American Army July 31 1775" which was said to be based on a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow quote. This legend become popular in the 1830s, though not true and was finally debunked in 1925. The tree fell in 1923 (aged 210 years) and was cut up into one thousand pieces and sold to the public and given to historical societies in all 48 states. A fine clean copy of this former New England legend about George Washington.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
